Rewatching TLJ, this scene is full of feelings and emotions and still heart touching. Such a nice shot.

Luke being imperfect, struggling with the responsibility of being a "legend," questioning the circle of good and evil perpetuated by the Jedi, and dealing with the weight of his failures is a heartfelt, and tragically beautiful depiction of Luke. Passive, non-violent confrontation was the true Jedi path, especially when confronting someone he loves. He nearly succumbed to the dark side when he faced Vader. He cut off his hand and for a split second (just like when he confronted Ben in his sleep) he considered striking him down. To think that Luke was just this omnipotent being who was an untouchable good guy warrior is not in line with his character at all. A physical confrontation with Kylo Ren would only end in death. If Kylo Ren dies, Luke loses. If Luke loses, the legend dies and the spark goes out forever. He faces down the first order, the story spreads across the galaxy, and inspires people to stand up against evil. It all makes so much sense IMO. It's such a deep emotional take on the character. Its the most Luke-like depiction I could have hoped for. He made mistakes, he failed, he learned, and he became the legend the galaxy needed.
