Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy is Still in Development

Van Cleef ruled. Hard to beat the standoff at the end of that one.

Yeah when I said there were some Disney misfires in portraying social justice, a few things in TLJ come to mind. Main characters, the only ones we know, are reduced to side gags and mom jokes while new characters come out of nowhere as a vehicle for random ass side plots. Finn and Poe, people we have some attachment to, are essentially demoted.

Finn’s origin as a Stormtrooper who has deserted is completely disregarded, and he is stuck playing sidekick to a new character (Rose) and taken to a slave/casino planet that had nothing to do with the main story. All the while, he’s reduced to slapstick physical humor and screaming out for Rey over and over. Not to mention, lectured. Constantly.

Poe is essentially vilified the entire movie, constantly getting shit on by Holdo for reasons unknown till the ending. Her character was fucking cringe. If that is feminism, it’s the corporate kind that the out of touch people think we all want to see. No realism, no real tie to the plot, just a new purple haired woman shoehorned in to check the boxes, least it’s come off that way. And in the end she’s the.. hero? We never even got to like her first.

They had a female character to develop already (Rey) and they didn’t. In three whole movies. They had diversity already, and once they checked the boxes of a black guy and a Latin guy on the poster (Poe and Finn) they promptly done what has been done over and over again, made them a one dimensional character and stereotypical silly comic relief.

So rather than the feminist agenda making the movie worse, I think it was corporate hijacking of what they think feminism and social justice means to them bothers me more. Not actually including any real feminist issues, but claiming it. Hard. It’s more of that wealthy person putting up black lives matter signs in the neighborhood they priced all the black people out of vibe.

And as for the movie, it sounds like the biggest gripe you and I have are the same.. the complete disregard for the source material. Shitting in the spirit of what made the franchise addicting. Also the fact that they did something we all thought was impossible.. made Benicio Del Toro forgettable.

I guess what I’m saying is, gays and feminists aren’t out to make movies bad. Some movies just don’t fuckin work. Rian Johnson has this other movie Knives Out where there was an alt-right character, it totally worked and didn’t feel ham handed. It’s case to case, not a global conspiracy is all I’m trying to say. Don’t let that ruin movies for you forever lol.
