Rich people of reddit who married someone significantly poorer, what surprised you about their (previous) way of life?

Japan was very strange, they are not like most human beings in this world, they live in a giant man made video game world and it's creepy IMO, it feels like a dystopian society full of fake people with fake smiles faking everything. The women also will use you to learn English, and they fawned over my husband until I told him they were just trying to practice English and then he found out they were super racist against non Japanese which makes literally ZERO sense to us as an interracial couple. We cut our trip short by 11 days and only stayed 3, we decided to give our money to a nation that was a bit less xenophobic and creepy / dystopian. Japan, felt to me, like a future I would rather not be a part of.
