Do I have the right to make name signs?

Take everything I say with a heaping of salt -- I am not part of the Deaf community, nor am I even deaf, mute, or HoH, just interested in the culture.

That being said, from what I understand, what is important with name signs is not how much you use or are proficient in the language, but to what degree you are a part of the community/culture. It's like, I can speak Portuguese daily, with everyone I interact with, and be 100% of Brazilian heritage, but if I don't participate in Brazilian culture and was always outside of it, I shouldn't lay claim to part of it -- and name signs definitely are toeing the line between language and culture, it seems. Because of this, I'd recommend being careful about that, and possibly just sticking to fingerspelling.

That being said, of course you can do what you want -- there's no name sign police that's gonna track you down. And I'm sure it wouldn't be seen as bad for you to give someone a name sign as it would for me to, or worse, for me to give myself one.

If I've said anything incorrect here, please correct me, I'm not claiming to be an expert or even relatively knowledgeable, and I am basically still a complete outsider to the Deaf community -- I'm just trying to help out as best I can given my ability.
