The Ringer needs a new podcast: “The Re-Rewatchables”

I’ll probably get downvoted, but whatever. Here’s my opinion on why it’s one of the most overrated and least rewatchable movies of the last decade.

For starters, the first half of the movie is basically just spent explaining things. It’s so boring rewatching it when you understand the premise and all they’re doing is explaining the world for 45 minutes.

This ties into my next point of the terrible character development. JGL’s character is a McGuffin. Elliot Paige’s character is too to a lesser extent. So many of the characters in this movie have so little depth to them and >75% of their dialogue is just them explaining an overly complex premise so the viewer can understand it. It’s interesting on the first watch but is a snooze fest on rewatch.

Last but not least, I think the premise is really flawed and movie is executed very poorly as a result. The movie has to explain itself way too much. One thing I agree with that guys like Fennessey, CR, and Van Lathan like to bring up is how much better movies are when they don’t over-explain. They let the viewer figure out in their own what’s going on. This movie does the complete opposite.
