Rise in young Britons wanting elected head of state, poll shows

As others have pointed out. It doesn't have to be that.

When my parents first voted in the 1960s, homosexuality was illegal, abortion was largely illegal, they grew up in South Africa where the apartheid was in force, the death penalty was still in force in many countries, and openly racist attitudes were widely acceptable.

They voted for liberal policies when they were younger due to social pressures from other countries / culture imports via movies etc. that was targeted at the youth.

However now they live in the UK, and now vote conservative. Not because their views have changed but the things the conservatives traditionally fight to protect against the liberals has changed. They now fight for equal marriage, legalising marijuana, increasing social mobility, encouraging immigration and a global no-boarders economy. It's not that they aren't as compassionate as they were when they were young, what they were compassionate about is no longer something to fight for. They don't watch modern movies, or absorb the same culture the youth is exposed to - the concept of a cisgendered person would completely flummox them e.g.

I think I have a point in there somewhere although I'm not sure I articulated it all that well... Basically I think I'm saying I don't think people get more conservative as they age, I think the conservatives get more liberal.
