RNG is the best

Almost the entirety of the depth and strategy in the new XCOM games comes from contingency planning. It's like chess, you think three steps ahead. Moving into this darkness may expose more aliens which will get a turn, so I should make sure my other characters have a move or are on overwatch before exposing more terrain.

And of course, this rookie has an 80% chance to hit this alien and a 4/5 chance to kill him. That has a small but decent chance to fail, so I should set my shotgunner up so he can swoop in with a 95% chance to kill. But that can fail in extreme circumstances, and that would leave soldiers exposed, so I should have someone with a grenade in range as well. That's how you secure a kill. And if you get lucky, 1-2 soldiers still get to act.

OPs image doesn't show a lack of depth or bad mechanics in XCOM, it just shows a funny animation bug, and if anything makes fun of players who rush blindly ahead hoping the RNG is in their favor, rather than using tactics.
