Want the roads in Atlanta not to suck? Vote (tomorrow)!

Starting a comment that's actually in support. Here's why:

  1. It has a ton of projects that simply have to be done. Bridges downtown were built before World War I. Road repaving will only get more expensive as they continue to deteriorate. Spending money now is not only smart but necessary.

  2. Interest rates are stupidly low, and will only go up from here over the next few years. I don't have time at this moment to dig up all the research, but I'll bet a 2 months of reddit gold that this project list done now is cheaper than a project list with every single questionable project (aka the pool) stripped out and an interest rate rise of 2%

  3. Yes there's waste, but don't kill the 80% to 90% that's good for the 10%-20% waste that will be there no matter what.

  4. It has money for bikes & signal optimization.

  5. Yes, it kills reversible lanes because reversible lanes are an inefficient and unsafe way to increase traffic throughput. Read Traffic by Tom Vanderbilt for more info on the counter-intuitive nature of traffic engineering.

Making DeKalb & Northside "Complete Streets" with clear markings, dedicated turn lanes, and signal optimization that reduce lane changes, confusion and rapid changes in speeds will increase throughput, and car safety - oh and as a bonus - we'll get bike lanes and safety improvements to walk!

  1. The facilities - again, most all of these are buildings that the city has to either maintain or buy replacements for anyway. There's waste, but there's also a ton of upside.

  2. The cameras - This is tough, but I think it's better to fight the actual program instead of indirectly fighting it via defunding.

  3. I think the comments & reception were ambivalent because there's not a ton that's new & exciting. It's all boring, routine but necessary. John Oliver had an interesting take here

tl;dr It's not ideal, but an overall good and very necessary project. Plus, money is super-cheap right now, so it makes every bit of sense to vote yes and get rolling now.
