What America and basically every "advanced Western democracy" has is a pluralistic system that has capitalist and socialist elements. They can and do exist side by side. Not every sector has to be socialist, some can be. Not everything has to be driven by free market principles, some can be and some can be controlled by the people (public education, military, etc.).

If people can get passed the absurdly foolish notion that we have to choose between pure capitalism or pure socialism we can get to the actual discussion which is less bombastic and more practical. It then becomes a matter of degrees and not some absurdly simplistic black and white worldview debate.
