'Rogue One' Alternate Ending Revealed: The Lifesaving Escape That Almost Was...

My problem with a lot of the deaths is that they didn't really serve a purpose to the narrative, and felt like weirdly forced ways to end off their characters. I expected Chirrut's death to be an important part of the movie for Baze's character. His whole life changes, and it's by far the most development he's gotten for the whole movie. I was really interested to see how his character would change to reflect this, since I liked him way more than the "real" main characters. But then he dies almost immediately after this. He barely says anything, and I think that they closed his story when it had more potential than ever before. It's one thing if Baze didn't want to live without Chirrut, but he just says Chirrut's catchphrase and starts shooting. There were a ton of emotions to convey, but they did it in a kinda generic fashion. Bodhi was also very sudden. I get that they were on a suicide mission, but I didn't think that their deaths were handled well. Bodhi dies from a random grenade that just shows up, and he doesn't even react much to it. If the characters REALLY had to die, the writers could have waited for the Death Star's laser to do the job, and have some ending wrap-up. At least as a kind of reflection. Killing them off suddenly the way that they were didn't make much sense to me, and overall it felt really sloppy. I wouldn't have minded the grenade if it just took out the ship. He would have realized that "there's really no way out" and have to come to terms with what that meant. Instead, he says his piece and dies.
But yeah. I liked Baze and Chirrut a lot more than any of the other characters, and I wasn't happy with how they didn't get nearly enough attention as I felt they deserved. No doubt it affects how I look at Baze's death and, to an extent, the others. And I know that this is an unpopular opinion, and I apologize if it comes off rough, but this stuff got under my skin when I saw the movie.
