The reason why we can tank this year is because of the unique circumstances the pandemic has brought to this season.
We don’t have any fans in the arena. The reason the NBA fines teams for tanking, is because fans pay to go to games and if you are sitting your best players when fans pay money to see them, it makes the NBA look bad.
We also have the foundational pieces in play to compete for a playoff spot without even needing a top 5 draft pick. We need the top 5 pick to take us to championship level, but not to make the playoffs.
SGA is already an elite guard in the league (if you are so oblivious to reality that you disagree, please google “Nate silver SGA” if you need some data to change your mind)
Lou Dort can guard ANY elite guard in the playoffs. If you disagree, go call james harden and ask him about his experience in 2019.
Baz is an all star waiting to happen. His size and athleticism are next level. If he increases his efficiency, the league better watch out.
Theo and Poku coming off the bench can hold their own against 2nd team defenses thst will keep us in games.
Where does that leave us?
Current Needs:
1) A rim protector who can space the floor = Evan Mobley
2) an elite shooter and defender who doesn’t need the ball in his hands and can make sure opposing defenses don’t double SGA = Jalen Green
P.S. the beauty of our draft assets is that we can get one or the other and then use the heat’s pick to fill the gap that we don’t get with our first pick. Kentucky’s center if we take green first. Or Ayo from Illinois if we take Mobley first
