Royal Never Give Up vs. G2 Esports / 2018 World Championship - Quarter-Final / Post-Match Discussion

For more context.

G2 has never made it out of groups at worlds. And just last year they lost 2 star players who were, at the time, considered the best botlaners in the west. They had to rebuild and entirely new roster based around their midlaner, Perkz. It went ok. They got 2nd place in EU in spring. That's pretty good. In the summer they got 3-0'd in quaters. But somehow they managed to pull through and win the regional qualifier for the 3rd european seed at worlds. G2 has shown up pretty well at worlds. They managed to take games off Flash Wolves and Afreeca (from taiwan and Korea) and outplace the Flash Wolves for a 2nd seed out of groups. But then they got matched against RNG for quarterfinals.

The narrative going into this tournament was the China was coming for Korea's throne. Korea has won the last 5 world championships. No Korean team has ever been knocked out in a best of 5 by any other region. No Korean team since Samsung Ozone in 2013 has failed to make it out of groups. Koreans have been lightyears ahead of everyone else since they started competing in tournaments.

But not this year. This year is the year of china. More specifically the year of RNG. China has won every international tournament of the year and they have been lead by RNG who won both domestic championships (spring and summer) as well as the Mid-Season Invitational. No one has been able to beat RNG in a best of five for the entire year. And their adc UZI is widely considered to be the best player in the world. UZI and RNG have made 2 previous world finals appearences falling short to Korean teams. But not this year. This was the year for Uzi and RNG to finally take their title.

G2 were the 3rd seed from europe.

G2 were never supposed to win this series.
