Russians are dropping maritime emergency radio beacons from drones to mark artillery targets

A few questions...

Don't they need to ping these things from satellite to know their location?

Nope. They all transmit on the same freq. 121.5 mHz.

Do they even transmit data about prior locations? How would they know where the drone dropped it first without comms?

They do not. The beacons are picked up by a LEO satellite that can work out an approximate position. For example, we had a helicopter that had a beacon activated in the hanger. We were told it was "somewhere at this airport, please help find it "

Are we assuming the drone records the location and sends it to arty team so they can lock onto the beacon?

Honestly, I don't see how this tactic can work. They all transmit on the same 2 freqs, (there is sometimes a higher frequency beacon too) Imagine trying to locate a single transmitter in a field where there are many, all transmitting. It doesn't make sense.
