Ryan Blaney to leave Wood Brothers Racing at the end of the season

It’s safe to say that Ryan Blaney has accomplished a lot in his short tenure in The Monster Energy Cup Series. Not only has the North Carolina native helped make Wood Brothers Racing a competitive race team again, he also came close to making the playoff’s last season and very well could do the same again in 2017. With that said, its not all rainbows and sunshine for the former Xfinity Series driver.

In fact, besides Chase Elliott and Ty Dillon, Blaney is the only driver to come to the Cup Series and not secure a win. He is also one of only a slew of drivers to not make The Chase yet, although he is very close to doing though this season. Unfortunately for Blaney, he is going to need some skill, some luck, and some horsepower in order to stay in contention for the post season and he still might not make it.

Whether fans of the young driver like it or not, a lot of that has to do with the fact that he is running for Wood Brothers Racing, which despite their best efforts, still remains a second tier team and has virtually no chance of remaining competitive with the higher funded teams when it comes to the playoffs.

That’s where Penske Racing comes in, which is looking to field a third race team in 2018 and apparently already have their eyes on Blaney as the driver. According to ESPN.com,”Roger Penske said he would like to bring Ryan Blaney into the Team Penske fold as soon possible, which would entail adding a third car to his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team.”

When asked about if it could happen next season, Penske responded with, well see, which could mean he is already in the process of courting the young driver to his championship winning race team. If true, and Blaney really could head to Penske at the end of the season, it would put Blaney with a team that has made The Chase on a yearly basis and has come close to winning it all on quite a few occasions.
