It’s been 8 months and Trevor Noah’s ‘Daily Show’ still sucks

See, I'd agree with this part:

The US isn't perfect but [...] every decision we make ripples across the entire world.

But everything else just doesn't follow.

it's the most important and significant nation on earth,

To make that statement, you have to presume a certain longevity to measure long-term significance, and given the trajectories of every major power on earth, it just isn't a given that the US is this. China, India and Russia are still hugely, hugely significant and can alter trajectories is drastic ways. At that level of influence, trying to measure precisely which nation has more importance becomes futile because countries of that class all are world-changingly powerful.

I think that qualifies us as maybe not the best but definitely the greatest.

Greatest implies best. So no, it doesn't. The US has a lot going for it, but it also sucks in a lot of ways. Historical accident has placed it at a nexus point, but it's foolishness to assume that's the only nexus, or that it could last forever.

Truth hurts.

By this you're ultimately implying that you are part of the "greatness". And this is my prime beef with nationalism and even patriotism in general: You're not. You're largely insignificant. You're a miniscule cog in the machine. You in some vanishingly, almost immeasurably small way contribute to a nation's influence, but it does not empower you. Same goes for me. We like to think of ourselves as part of the powerful, as being on the level of decision-makers and world-changers, but like the vast majority of people we're not. And on that level, bragging about "greatness" becomes futile cock-measuring contest. Except that it's just another sad sublimation, like buying an expensive car. You're not great for being an American. America would never be great because of you.
