It’s ok when *they* do it

As someone who spent most of the pandemic in China I can tell you categorically that the Chinese lockdowns were much more repressive and extreme than anything that we had in Canada.

Chinese people are being tested for covid almost every single day, and the second you test positive or become a "close contact" of anyone who's tested positive you're hauled off to a government quarantine centre (prison), or if you're lucky, you're locked into your own home. You cannot go anywhere in public without scanning a "health code" that tells the government exactly who you are and where you're going. All of this is enforced with brute force and complete disregard of what little rule of law exists in China. If you thought lockdowns in Canada were draconian, China is something else entirely.

I'm not saying lockdowns in Canada were handled well or that people shouldn't have protested them, but Chinese zero covid is not comparable at all and it would be disingenuous to suggest that the anti-lockdown movements in China and in the West are the same.
