It’s Time to Get Rid of the IT Department - WSJ

I might have put the idea into the mind of this guy, and he just ran with it without exactly thinking deeply about it. I do think that IT as we know it today as a politically and bureaucratically ridden cost center cannot survive in this form for multiple factors, some of which are highlighted in the article as well. When we talk about getting rid of IT, we basically mean the operational part. The fixed-cost part. There are of course parts of IT that are required in terms of regulation or security. I argue these will also be eventually replaced. There is, however, a part that is traditionally part of IT that ought actually be part of the business teams: Engineering, the ability to match business demand with software techniques and tools to arrive at an efficient solution / supply. I believe this should be decentralized into business teams as it allows them to be more agile and empowers them to have better mental tools to address their domain-specific challenges. That is also what agile, devops, lean, data science, etc. try to tell us. So, how do we get rid of IT completely from an operational and technological point of view. The answer will be by evolving the current cloud-based platforms into full-fledged enterprise operating systems that allow execution, development, deployment and distribution end-to-end. Think of an iOS or Android for companies instead of for individuals. In my opinion, this is surely happening soon.
