S10E02: "PharmaRusical" [Post-Episode Discussion]

I keep mentioning it because "And I Am Telling You" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" are the only two LSFYL songs I can think of that were emotional powerhouse songs like Eureka was trying to make this song. I had no clue if you'd watched as early as Season 4, so I kept mentioning the Season 8 song.

I'm saying it was created with the intention that it would be played in discos and to cause people to dance in discos. That is what disco music is. Look up the song and look up disco music in general. You're trying to generalize the music and the genre so that it fits outside of the parameters I set; parameters in which your narrative is incorrect. But, researching the song, it has been described as a "disco classic" and one writer in Chicago this past summer, on the 40th anniversary of it being number 1 on the charts, wrote "Listening to the "Whoa-oh-whoa" chorus all these years, all these listens later, it's impossible to hold back a smile." So I have proof to hold up my opinion that it is a good time, feel good disco song. I'm not shallow, I'm going by how the world, and the singers, define their own music.

"I Will Survive" done without dancing, no matter how powerfully, would seem off. Both Laila and Dax were horrible at it: Laila for frolicking around pointlessly and Dax for standing and walking (ie not dancing) and not being particularly connected.

I saw no camp in Eureka's performance, but as I said before, I'm hardened to her.

Regarding your sidenote: None of that Diana Ross music is a deep, soul-churning emotion-fest either. It's light-hearted and not very deep. So yes, you can do a Bebe hair-flouncing version of it, but you can't try to make it some great work of emotional songwriting.
