I mean lots of people care about making streets safer. But every time a local government wants to make a street safer, which involves taking away space for cars, reducing speed limits or reducing the alcohol limit, people protest.
As a result streets are more dangerous and (drunk) driving kills more people than in many Western European countries, per capita, per car, and per vehicle mile.
As a non-American I get the impression that Americans value individual rights more than the lives of others. That's fine, but I think accusing people who want to change that of hypocrisy is unfair. I bet the person that made that sign also cares more about road safety than the average American.
