In all honesty, I'm torn
An addict in my immediate family died of an overdose recently. I hate opiates with an irrational anger, an anger that has only been refined while dealing with a Baker's dozen of deaths of childhood friends over the past 30 years.
This judge's verdict bothers me because he sees it as a "money crime." Because he's not an addict, and did it for his family. And if he was sent to prison he would almost certainly be deported.
My hot take: Don't deport the dude. I don't want him punished, I want the drug that killed my sisters and brothers off the street.
Don't make him an "example" that says drug distribution is a way to provide for a family. That concept, of "making an example," works both ways.
And don't "kill" a man for carrying a package of drugs the size of 2 packs of cigarettes.
I don't know. I'm ranting. What do you think, account_redacted?
