Same course, more power, less weight, [relatively] same gear, but slower speed... why?

  • power meters have wild margins of error based on location on the bike, model, brand, left crank vs. otherwise, if it's a stages shimano L/R crankset, calibration settings, how well maintained your drivetrain is, and so on. this is why comparing FTPs is mostly bullshit and it's more important that your personal PM is internal consistent than what specific number it's giving you.
  • his riding style might just be more efficient than yours; smooth & even pacing with a focus on sustaining an even power across uneven terrain or wind will provide a much more efficient power profile overall compared to one that's mostly inconsistent efforts.
  • maybe he just doesn't ride on windy days like you do?
