I would say the split is east-west-south. The east is mostly poor, corrupt, dictatorial, and conservative and are all countries formerly on the other side of the iron curtain.
Then you have southern countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal etc. Poorer than the rest of the west but richer than the east. They tend to have lots of economic problems, are very conservative and have problems with populism and democracy. Most of these countries are formerly fascist.
Then there is the west, like Germany, France, UK etc. Richer, more democratic, more progressive but still have some problems and are sometimes pissed that they have to carry the rest of Europe.
You could also count the north as their own thing. Amongst the richest, most progressive and most democratic countries in the world.
