Samsung Electronics' record earnings see it overtake Apple

Not true. Source.

That isn't a source. That's a stupid dead end without source from someone that read things on the internet and happens to write for that website. Samsung's phone division keeps getting less and less relevant.

Samsung themselves shared the numbers and their Mobile division made less than 30% of net profits from Samsung Electronics. Did you even bother to read the thread your are posting on? The links are all here, I already posted them.

Samsung makes more money from the low end than from the high end

Source need. It seems like you are making more shit up, because there's not a single fucking OEM making any amount of money similar to what Samsung Mobile does from phones, and the difference is that Samsung sells way more high end phones than all other Android OEMs.

It should be noted that Apple's overall market share has been declining as well, it's not a Samsung-only phenomenon.

Not on developed countries, by far. The opposite is happening. The only "issue" is that replacement cycles are growing, so sales slow a bit, but installed userbase keeps growing while the "Android flagship" scene was obliterated almost completely.

The S8 is horrendously expensive to produce, and I think that has a big impact.

Due to some poor, stupid decisions, maybe. But the main issue is that it is selling even less than the S7, so that affected economies of scale.
