San Bernardino shooting: Attacker pledged allegiance to ISIS, officials say

I know I'm 5 days late. Also not sure that what I'm about to say even actually responds to your point. This has just been on my mind lately, and comes up whenever I hear an argument like yours. Not saying you're wrong at all. But if you expect people to go ahead and drop everything they've ever believed, and often everything that anyone that they've ever know has also fully believed, prepare to be disappointed. I think we in the west tend to get pretty self-righteous about how ridiculous of a concept religion is. Sure, it's ridiculous in a lot of ways. It's also been the driving force in civilization since it pretty much began up until fairly recently ("cult"ure, right?). But just to put it in perspective: assuming that you are a a white secular westerner, you are likely either the first or among the few most recent generations in your bloodline to not have Christianity completely dominate your daily existence. Go back to your grandfather's grandfather, and his grandfather, and his grandfather, and his grandfather. And his grandfather. And his grandfather. Let's assume you were raised Catholic. If you were, then it is likely that you could go a mass on Sunday, and more or less follow the same liturgy and rituals and prayers that your forefathers would have done every Sunday for their entire lives. Said the same prayers. Kneeled at the same time. Vatican 2 did change a lot of that, but you get my point. Try to go back far enough to before the first conversion, and you'll wind up in some place like ancient Gaul, Germania, or Britania. Speaking of Catholics, wild guess what the oldest single organization in the world is? The Catholic church... by a long shot. It's been around, with a relatively cohesive central organization and bureaucracy, with an uninterrupted lineage of management, since before the English language and arabic numerals. Look around you and try to find something older than that. "Chairs" were kind of a new thing when they first got started. I guess my point is, thats's a lot of momentum to just shake off, and might take a little more than getting told off by some self-righteous neckbeards on reddit.
