Sanders getting more super PAC money than Clinton

They're playing fast and loose with facts in this article, and they mix up what it is they're talking about. The New York Times just work a similar piece, the intercept did a good job of breaking it down:

While more money has indeed been spent on a certain type of campaign spending in support of Sanders, the article leaves the wrong impression by suggesting that pro-Sanders Super PACs have outpaced outside groups supporting Hillary Clinton. If that sounds confusing, that’s because the Times article hinges on a technicality in campaign finance law.

When total Super PAC spending is measured, Clinton groups are leading the way.

The newspaper calculated totals using only “independent expenditures” spent by Super PACs. If the Times had taken into account all pro-Clinton Super PAC campaign spending from this cycle, outside money spent in support of Clinton is more than twice the amount spent in support of Sanders.

Now combine that with this:

Clinton has helped raise money for a super PAC: Priorities USA Action, a group originally formed to help re-elect President Obama and now run by a former Clinton campaign aide.

The group has raised more than $40 million since the beginning of last year, including seven-figure contributions from the kind of billionaire financiers Sanders delights in lampooning. Priorities USA has continued to husband most of its money for later in the campaign, however, in anticipation of a major general-election battle, with Clinton as the nominee.

One Clinton backed Super Pac has raised $40 million alone (compared to National Nurses United, which is less than 5 mill) - but because they're waiting to spend it they're not counting it as Clinton getting Super Pac money!

While Sanders frequently declares he has no super PAC of his own, he has not publicly called on the nurses to refrain from their efforts on his behalf.

They're not his PAC, he has no control over them first. Second, his campaign has in fact spoken out on that:

In an email Monday to supporters, his campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, wrote that Sanders has been surprised to learn about the pro-Sanders campaigns of outside groups that are allowed to raise unlimited amounts of money from donors. Sanders rails against such groups on the campaign trail, saying they contribute to a corrupt political system.

“They should spend their money somewhere else,” Weaver wrote. “We do not want their help.”
