Saudi Crown Prince Says Women Need Not Wear Headcover

Living in a very orthodox society, change is difficult.

In a country existing in some insane Mexican standoff between the US petrodollar, the mullahs, the appetites of thousands of greedy royals, and the young men with no work, you're talking about a ton of masculine energy and testosterone that is not being positively utilized or directed. The effects are obvious - war, rape, self hatred, and death cults.

Because Men cannot live in harmony in a world of their own making that excludes the voices of Women. That's a major difference between the Middle East and the West, that over here women shape society in a way they are separated from over there. Not that the West is doing any favors by bombing these peoples and selling weapons willy nilly and generally stirring up that macho bullshit.

If one were inclined to enact broad changes, a good place to begin would be to loosen restrictions on women. The driving, the hair - these can be seen as the beginning of a loosening of social behaviors that will lead to more rational interactions and a restoring of the nurturing contribution that women can and should be making within society in general. Giving women a voice, giving them power, allowing them to activate, coordinate, and shape society - this will lead to healing, and should be encouraged.

Every point you've made has been spot on - the Crown Prince is a shady guy making power moves and his motives are suspect. And yes, the Kingdom has so far to go, and first real stop is end this bullshit slaughter in Yemen.

But Redditors ain't trying to hear that when they are trying to show encouragement to Saudis for what at first glance might seem like empty symbolism and the appearance of reform where none exists, but looks great from an optics standpoint.

The truth is that the hair thing actually will change things, but it will take a long time. Probably not what you want to hear, but it's not just because Redditors are unaware of the nuances. You made solid points, habibi.
