Saw this on PCM [SocialMedia]

That's what the picture is saying, but the title is saying the literal opposite

Are you talking about the PCM title? Cause no it's not. It's saying we should NOT teach kids that they can only identify with characters of their own skin color or appearance. With other words it's saying that for kids it shouldn't matter what race a character is.

Honestly I don't see anything wrong with the message. but I have 2 problems with the meme using the lil mermaid controversy.

  1. It's pointlessly gendered as explained earlier.
  2. It's implying that the black lil mermaid is teaching kids they should only identify with characters of their own race. Which is bullshit, cause it not teaching that at all, in fact it's giving the chance to non-black kids to identify themselves with the black lil-mermaid.

Moreover, by their own logic it shouldn't matter if the lil mermaid is black, white, asian or something else.

Lastly, the race of Ariel is not critical part of the story, so changing her race in this re-imagination of the story shouldn't be a big deal. The same stories get retold and re-imagined all the time throughout the centuries and different countries and sometimes by doing so new stories are created. So retelling this story differently isn't that out of the ordinary in the big picture, if you think about it. Furthermore retelling of the story doesn't delete or redcon other versions or the orginal. Those stories still exist and people can pick which version they want to experience. So it's not taking away anything from anybody, it in fact just adding, so people can experience the story in a different way.
