Nah, humans were always like this. This is a consequence of population size. We never considered what could happen if every tiny per-capita group was massive in raw numbers. We thought the balance of per capita would mean nothing could change it. Remember: education is new. The uneducated masses were the uneducated masses throughout most of history. This is a return to form for humanity, not a violation of the norm. The violation of the norm was the 20th Century. We want that violation, but this should serve as a reminder that this is the base state of humanity and we must create that world. If you define the word “evil” to mean “lacking in empathy but high in greed and sadism”, I would argue the base nature of humanity is evil, and we must build civilization as the leash that keeps human nature under control.
