Scamvangelist and convicted felon Jim Bakker suffers stroke

I was the keyboardist in the band for his show back in 2003 in Branson, MO. I’m not religious, I was just young and needed the money so I played along for a while. After about 8 months it felt so gross I had to stop. I remember back then they would have their “adopted children” from Guatemala on the show as a sympathy ploy. I’m pretty sure the oldest one was actually the father, and they would put makeup on him to cover up his facial teardrop tattoos. He seemed like a nice guy! Jim probably met him in prison. I saw him living it up in the VIP at a club in Springfield one night, and we were both like- oh, uhhhh, hey... -that moment when we both realized we were not the people we pretended to be on set. From what I gathered, before Jim went to prison he entrusted a lot of money to a loyal follower so when he got out he was able to finance his operation again. I had never heard “talking in tongues” before until I worked on that show, and I accidentally laughed out loud during one of the (mandatory) pre-broadcast prayers. That was the day I realized just how in-deep some of those people really were. From a musical perspective, there would be guest singers and musicians promoting something like a book or product each day and the band would be given a CD- again this was 2003- and we would literally have 30 mins to learn 5 songs and then have to play them live on air right afterward. So it was a great musical exercise, even though the genre was hokey country-gospel crap. It paid my bills for about 8 months, and then fortunately I picked up enough other gigs that I could afford to stop. It felt gross.
