Scared to Drive in San Diego

I think living in San Diego has both greatly sharpened my driving skills while at the same time showed me more and more reasons to be terrified of driving. I lived in the SF Bay area before I moved here. I did not have any driving anxiety at all until more than a decade of dealing with crazy SD drivers. They seem to suffer from a combination of bad manners and lack of skill. I've been rear-ended four times since I moved here. Now I frequently have this thought as I'm getting into the car: I wonder if someone is going to crash into me today? Comparing it to LA...it's kind of the same. Although I noticed that LA drivers are more likely to let you merge. Here they will risk death rather than allow you into their lane.

Also, I'm not sure if this is unique to San Diego, but the highways here have a habit of frequently peeling off the slow lane to a forced exit, which forces you to merge if you want to stay on the highway (sometimes unexpectedly). Which isn't great if you're trying to chill in the slow lane.
