I rewatched this recently. It has a handful of fantastic and imaginative scenes (not only the scene linked here, but numerous others sprinkled throughout the rest of the movie), but the overall plot of the movie is a hot mess, the climax is cringe-worthy for anyone who has ever seen "The Wrath of Khan", and the movie runs out of steam about 5-10 minutes before the finale.
Overall, the whole thing was a colossal waste of talent and money.
I'm glad that they got a chance to redeem themselves in "Star Trek Beyond". It was perhaps even more action-heavy than "Into Darkness" and is not without its faults (i.e. the "motivation" of the villain), but it was the first time in these three movies where the characters had a real spark and some real chemistry with each other, the "Enterprise" really felt lived-in, and the much more streamlined storyline was far more effective and much better paced.
"Into Darkness" is just such a mess. This movie is what happens when you get writers and producers throw random shit and a bunch of money against the wall to see what sticks.
