school enrollment in MSP

We have not been having a great time with Elementary school. We live in the middle of three. Only one of those schools does Pre-K, which is the one our kid is in, he had to be on a waiting list and missed the first 3-4 weeks of class.

The other two schools have Kindergarten, but our kid, understandably, is excited about continuing at his current school.

Unfortunately, that one is not within our 'borders', despite being equidistant from all three. So, we submitted our paperwork ahead of the deadline and chose the school he currently is enrolled at for pre-K as his top and only choice.

This seemed to piss off the enrollment office for Minneapolis School District, as they were very ... challenging to speak with on the phone regarding.

Open Enrollment might as well not be a thing if the only time you can Open Enroll is when their is a classroom seat available for your child at an alternative school.

The most fair way to approach it, in my opinion, is as /u/trisunflower indicated, where they take all of the applications for a child to attend that school by a certain deadline and then commence with a lottery or whatever they need to do if the number of applications exceeds the number of dedicated seats.

As is, the current method definitely favors the kids who have closest proximity to the school which is ideal for that neighborhood and school district, but not for someone that lives in a triangle of schools, just not exceptionally close to any of them.
