The issue here is basically between an enumerated right (the 2nd Amendment) and one so fundamental that it wasn't even thought necessary to be included in the Constitution, although it was declared in the Declaration of Independence (the right to life).

However, the US is party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (the functional version of the UN Declaration of Human Rights), and that does guarantee the right to life. Now, there's a bit of a thorny situation here - international treaties should trump local law, but on the other hand there's the Supremacy Clause. So, the implementation is a bit wonky. But the fact is, the 2nd Amendment isn't the end-all, be-all, especially given that the Founders made their thoughts on this particular matter clear in the DoI.
