Science AMA Series: I’m Professor Mady Hornig at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, Ask Me Anything about chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS)!

Prof Horning, THANK YOU for your research and THANK YOU for this Q&A. Questions: -How long off do you anticipate this potential diagnostic blood test? -Is there any actively way to follow your research and findings? -If there is any way that data from me and my medical history could be helpful to your research or anyone else's, please refer me. If I can do anything that could help others not go through this, I will! I am a 12 years sufferer of CFS and in the past 5 years have been unable to work in a meaningful capacity and for about a year was bed-ridden to housebound. I have been so ill for the last 5 years that I applied for federal disability. My trajectory of illness seems right on target with your observations. I never recovered from a second bout of mononucleosis at age 18 and since then have seemed to go through different "stages," ultimately getting increasingly debilitated physically and cognitively and developing severe food and environmental allergies. At this point, I believe most of my body systems (not just immune system) became so messed up that a bunch of other problems have been able to take hold. My condition has overall improved in the last year as I finally have a good specialist who has managed to diagnose MANY specific issues. The most notable are: C. Pnuemoniae (bacterial infection), viral infections (epstein barr and HHV6) chronic candida, adrenal insufficiency, thyroid insufficiency. My current personal theory is that a low-grade persistence of Epstein Barr has been the originator of immune disfunction and that has lead to many other health problems and eventually other body systems malfunctioning, reaching a point where I couldn't even hold myself in a sitting position or use my brain at all (at my worst, I literally could not read anything). If you have any comments for me, but more importantly, again, if there is any way I could be useful research, please direct me! Truly cannot thank you enough!
