Scott Morrison says we can't shut down Australia to contain second wave of Covid-19

He was dragged kicking and screaming into the first lockdown by the premiers (honestly it's been infuriating seeing people give him credit for "handling the crisis" well because if he'd had his way, we'd be in America's boat right now with tens of thousands of deaths and far more severe economic impacts).

Time and again he has failed to follow sound medical advice.

We're still being told 1.5m separation is sufficient protection - according to the evidence, it absolutely isn't and doesn't come close. We're being told schools can stay open as children somehow magically don't spread/catch the virus - yet according to the evidence children are at risk and do spread the virus. 12000+ children have caught the virus in Florida alone and thousands of American teachers have died. We're being told we don't need to wear masks, despite overwhelming evidence they offer substantial protection.

Many of his actions have encouraged people not to take this seriously enough. Remember during the height of the last lockdown when, during his confusing late-night press conferences, he was chastising bondi-beach goers in practically the same breath and telling people to go buy jigsaw puzzles (totally essential shopping...)

He also made the risky decision not to go for an elimination strategy - which is the only viable way we're going to avoid repeated stop-start lockdowns (which are going to be far more damaging). A vaccine is going to take a year or more, and modelling has again and again indicated the "let her rip" strategy is going to result in a huge number of deaths. There's also little guarantee that approach would even work - it's certainly not working out very well for countries like Sweden that have tried it; it's likely to take years to reach herd immunity levels IF the virus even confers immunity, and mounting evidence suggests it may not. Elimination is in all honesty the ONLY viable option unless we want to go through rolling lockdowns - and which is likely to be more disruptive?

Countries like NZ and Taiwan have shown it IS possible to get this thing eliminated and under control. We are just going for the brainless, complacent approach, and we are going to end up like America, with hospitals overwhelmed and unnecessary lives lost.

The Premiers need to act now, without him, and shut down again - because he is clearly incapable of actually protecting this country.
