Screenwriters: how did you get started in the industry?

Been a full time writer for 20 years. Was an officer in the Air Force (not American) for a couple of years. Went on to study business in college. Worked as an executive in a construction and development company for a few years. Throughout all those time mentioned been watching local TV shows and hated them. This needs to change! So wrote a telefilm script and passed it to a friend who was working in the industry. His producer loved it and bought the script. Was happy as hell until I previewed the tape. My jaw dropped because it turned out just like the shite I had been watching all those years. That though has kept me writing, with the hope that someday the final outcome would finally be exactly like the way I want it to be... until today.
