Scumbag Emma Sulkowicz

This is completely accurate. I feel empowered knowing it didn't break me, and talking about it can be therapeutic. That being said, I won't call attention to myself for it. It's just tacky.

In my opinion, based on what I've read, my experience, and what I've learned from others in similar situations, she was never a victim to begin with. She solicited a sexual encounter, which doesn't mean she can't change her mind later, but the fact that she had sex with him prior to the supposed rape occurred makes the situation fishy already, especially because she was saying she loved and missed him. Also, the two additional accusations (that were later withdrawn) came from friends of this girl. That seems too much like petty revenge to me.

She was (and probably still tries to be) incredibly promiscuous. That's not to say that she still can't be raped, but it doesn't help the case that she experienced a traumatic sexual encounter. True, people react differently, but the fact that there was little change in her behavior whatsoever, except for the fact that she was vocal about the rape, is just odd.

As a result of her accusations, this man's reputation is now irreparably tarnished, while she can live without consequence. This is the unfortunate reality of a broken system that not only fails to protect many victims, but also the accused from a damaged image resulting from false accusations.

What is sad is that rape happens, but also attention starved individuals also try to draw attention to themselves by fabricating a tragic story at the unfortunate expense of an innocent individual. They draw attention away from the real problem by invalidating what true victims experience. Rape is under reported and few convictions occur. This isn't good. True offenders shouldn't walk free just because their victims are advised to not move forward. There is also the terrible stigma against male victims, who are probably a large percentage of the victims as well. Maybe not half, but I wouldn't be surprised if they made up over a third of the victims, to be honest.

But instead of the media focusing on real issues, we have to deal with this mentally ill person hogging the attention. Instead of giving her airtime, she should be given psychological help because she obviously needs it. And this guy should be given a public apology by both his university and the media outlets who vilified him.
