Section of the churches 1981 handbook on homosexuality that the church should take note of

Unfortunately, a Lot of church members still believe that. Just in the last month, my DD was taught in YW’s that being gay was a sin. The YW did not accept that. And the teacher was corrected afterwards when another leader found out. The teacher was shocked to learn that the church’s stance had changed to “acting on homosexual feelings” is a sin. That topic than came up with MIL (TBM DH was frustrated that the lesson happened). DH was saying the way someone is born cannot be considered a sin. She said, “you’re trying to tell me that science can prove all these gay people didn’t choose to be gay, that they can just be that way. And it isn’t from masturbation, porn, or trying to be different. I pointed out that her son was as hetero as men come and no amount of anything was going to suddenly make him attracted to men. Why would she think others could just choose to switch who they are attracted to. And then DH pointed out that the church’s stance has changed and no longer insists that it is a choice. I asked her how will she respond if one of our kids were to come out. Because as parent, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to be a Mormon lgbtq teen. But as a human being, I shouldn’t have to wait till it happens to my own child to find compassion for someone in the situation. She then cried and said it actually was something she struggled with. I thought we were making headway. And then she said, well, I guess it’s just like blacks and the priesthood. We know that wasn’t because of racism but for some reason God needed it that way for a long time. Maybe someday there will be a place for gays like there is now for blacks. But they can’t change doctrine like the proclamation to the family. I said, I do think it was because of racism. And she was incredulous that I could say church leaders were racist.
