Seeking some guidance for losing weight (23/6'2"/M/295lbs)

I played college ball at 6'2" 290-295 so I know how you're feeling. I got done playing and had no practical use to be that large anymore so I made the commitment to myself that I'd lose weight. As of my Sunday weigh in, I'm sitting at 212. Here's how I did it.

In college, I always told myself that when I was done playing ball, I wanted to be able to run. Because while playing, distance running was an unheard of concept to me (I was an offensive lineman). So when I began my weight loss process, I had to take baby steps; almost literally. I would get on a treadmill, set some incline on it so I'd be walking uphill, and then just walk. 30min, 45 min, sometimes an hour if I was feeling it. This is when I began to see some weight come off and I started to realize that shit was actually working. Once I was down to 260-270 range, I lowers the incline but upped the speed and began slowly jogging. A mile was a fucking chore at the beginning but in order to be good at something, you have to be willing to be really bad at it first. So I kept running. Slow, slow paces at first, gradually increasing the distance and speed as I was comfortable with.

As far as diet goes, I never really looked up a "set in stone" diet. I just ate smarter. I began to actually look at the calorie counts of foods, and while I didn't necessarily count and calculate all my calories, I was much more aware of them.

Water became my only beverage. Need some flavor? Used some 0 cal Mio to give it some taste. Energy? A single 0 cal energy drink to start my day (or whenever I was feeling tired).

Above all I just started making healthier choices. Like you, I was never a big breakfast water, so I'd usually have an apple and an energy drink as I drove into work in the morning. Lunch, call it cliche, but I was a regular at Subway, and the lovely employees knew to start a turkey footlong, lettuce, cucumbers, green peppers with salt and pepper when I walked in. Dinner was my biggest meal and probably my most flexible. That's when I'd have a pasta dish or steak or something like that. Yes, that Digiorno in the freezer would be fucking delicious, but aside from the 10-15 min of delight that I get while eating it, I'll feel like a piece of shit for the next 4 hours for eating such a shitty meal. I began to take some pride in the way I was taking care of my body and didn't want to have any hiccups on the road to my success.

Above all, it just came down to doing it. I know that may seem obvious, but that's really all it takes. Become aware of what you're putting in your body. Make every meal choice a deliberate one.

I'm not a pro at much of anything, especially these inspirational how-to's. But I'm here to tell you that it's possible. You'll lose the weight of you really want to work for it. If you have any questions I'll be glad to answer as best I can.
