A watch rated for 40*g is not "incredibly" delicate. Especially given its history.

What is that? 40gs is a lot to something with a lot of mass, but what is the equivalent to? Probably, dropping on a non-cushioned surface from a distance more than 10 times is diameter.

Its history:

  • Chosen in the 60s out of the available watches
  • Worn by one of the astronauts on the moon on the first landing (Neil didn't wear his)
  • Broke in space during a mission forcing David Scott to wear his unapproved Bulova on the moon (for which Bulova has issued an updated model at a fraction of the price, with a high end quartz and updated features and a price that is less than the cost of the original Speedmaster)
  • Is now marketed as a "moon watch" along with updated models, and exclusively a luxury product which costs thousands of dollars and has a service cost starting a $650
  • Is replaced by $40 G-Shocks for actual missions in space

By this train of logic one should stick to G Shocks.

NASA does...

The Speedmaster was great for its day, but compared to even basic and cheap watches now, it is incredibly delicate.

Compared to normal mechanical watches, it is incredibly delicate.
