Senior Democrats drafting plan to give parents at least $3,000 per child in Biden stimulus

It's not government's money. It's taxpayers' money.

Admittedly this is a sore issue for me also because I have no kids, don't want any, and don't think I should pay for other people's kids.

The way I look at it is the government takes money out of my pocket and gives it to people with kids. Or perhaps more accurately takes money out of everyone's pockets, but then only gives some of it back to people who put the greatest strain on society by adding to the population and needing schools and such.

It's not really about getting ahead. That's often personal choices. Someone can work their ass off and forgo something, and I'm just randomly picking dining out as that something, and save that money. The government policy here would be to say they are going to take the money I save by not dining out and redistribute some of it to people who choose to dine out even if they can't afford to do so.

I'm sure someone will say "dining out isn't the same as having kids." Of course it's not. It doesn't matter. It can be applied to any aspect of life. It's just an example.
