When I was 14 I was messing around with my dad's phone and discovered that he had a passcode on certain sections of it (messages, pictures, etc) so I tried the one 4-digit code I knew, our garage door code which is the last 4 digits of my dad's SS#. Once I got into his messages, I found out he was having an affair with one of his nurses. This was a woman I had already known for years and had baby-sat her kids. Being 14, I had no clue what to do so I just didn't tell anyone. I quit listening to anything my dad said and I kind of got the sense that he knew I knew something so I could pretty much get away with doing whatever I wanted. My mom ended up finding out about 2 years later and everything came out. Turns out the affair had been going on for about 7 years total. After that my family pretty much fell apart. My mom forgave my dad and let him stay on the condition that he ceased contact with the lady, but a few months later she caught him again and he moved out. We found out later that my dad was addicted to prescription sleeping medication and was writing scripts in my mom's name, filling them and using them for his own personal use. When that was discovered, he lost his narcotics privileges, had to go to state-mandated rehab in Atlanta, and lost his partnership with clinic he co-owned. They've been divorced for about 3 years now after a lengthy separation and I have more of an acquaintance relationship with my dad than a father-son relationship. My dad lost pretty much everything in the divorce and will probably have to work until he's in his 70's in order to ever realistically retire. My mom only taught part time and was extremely dependent on him financially so she's had a rough go of it too. It affected my personal relationships for a long time and when I started the woman who is now my life, we struggled a lot because I had serious trust issues. We've been married for 2 years now and I couldn't be happier!
