[serious] Parents of obese children, when did you realize your child was obese, and what are your plans to correct it?

Your daughter can still try to lose some weight before the surgery. I'd suggest swimming or walking at least 10-30 minutes everyday (if she can't do it, work up to it.) Only eat when you're hungry. Try not to get seconds unless you actually feel hungry. Make dessert a special once-a-week occasion. Don't drink soda. Eat slowly and drink a lot of water during meals. If you lose you're stomach pangs before finishing a dish, just put it in the fridge and eat it when you're hungry again. Exercise is going to feel unpleasant if your body is not used to it. In fact, I expect it to hurt with her body, so I'd motivate her not to quit with special privileges. I would try eating off of smaller plate. Make your snack foods not junk foods (grapes, baby carrots, bread, etc.) I know people like to nibble when they're bored, and it'll be a little better if you at least restrict the snack choices in the house. You can't buy 'bad' stuff for yourself either. It'll increase the chances of you bringing unhealthy foods home or make your kids upset that you're 'cheating' without them. I unintentionally lost 10 pounds (even though I was already in a healthy weight range) in about two or three months because I sort of lived like this last year as a freshman in college. (However, I couldn't buy snacks at all and probably walked more than 30 min for my classes. Eating meals required me walking a great distance to get to the dining hall, decreasing my motivation to go get food.) Don't stop trying even with the promise of a gastric bypass in the future. :)
