(Serious) People who lost a lawsuit, what happened?

A few years ago, my boyfriend and I were stopped at a red light busy intersection on a busy 4-lane (two on each side) road. The light turned green and we started to go. I was looking down at my phone (I was the passenger) and my boyfriend didn't see a dude cut across us to turn into the gas station to our right.

We ended up t-boning his car. Our car was totaled even though we weren't going fast because we hit head on and it was a somewhat older car with a good amount of miles on it. I'm pretty sure the other guys car was alright, just needed a door or two replaced. I'm not totally sure to be honest, I just know he drove it away and none of his airbags deployed I don't think. I asked the other guy if he was alright, he said yeah and then we all just sat in silence. None of us went to the hospital that night.

It came out to be his fault obviously. His insurance paid us out for our totaled car and we all went on our way.

Nearly two years my boyfriend gets served with a lawsuit. The asshole was suing my boyfriend, claiming that because of his "negligent driving" the guy had been in an out of the hospital for the past two years with aches and a bunch of other made up bullshit. He was suing my boyfriend for $100,000, claiming that he was speeding (even though we had just started going from a red light). Fucking insane.

My boyfriend and I both give statements to his insurance. I remember the accident perfectly clear, but my boyfriend doesn't. He also can't handle pressure at all and ends up stuttering a lot and second guessing himself. He's probably the worst person for a lawyer to have to defend.

Long story short, my boyfriend's lawyer didn't feel confident that the jury would side with him because he seemed so unsure of his answers. They ended up going to mediation and the guy won $12,000. I wish it had been me that they had been questioning instead.
