Our small town high school had a prestigious basketball program. While I was going there, there was an NBA player in the making, who is now an all star currently playing.

As a result, the player and, by extension, the basketball program, was kind of a staple in the community.

Where it gets dark: the assistant coach was a pedophile (and a sadistic one, at that). When kids started coming forward with stories of abuse, the school adminstration and the basketball program covered it up. The local police eventually investigated, and while they seem to believe all of the victims, didn't move forward with pressing charges.

The coach was put on paid leave for a year, then quietly moved to a different state. He's coaching again. I'm sure he'll be on to the next small town soon.
