[Serious] Redditors who have seen an employee fired on the spot, what did they do that caused them to deserve it?

This happened when I was undergoing my residency in anaesthesia during my first year. By this time we were usually left alone to handle the surgeries, with our senior consultant doctors checking in once or twice.

I was posted in ortho trauma rotation. We used to handle a lot of accidents, mostly young patients. Although we were being trained, I was still inexperienced and used to get stressed and anxious a lot. It is a unique period in your life, where you are thrown in deep waters, left to sink or drown.

Anaesthesiologists usually have technicians working under them. They are often very valuable. A smart technician can reduce your work load a lot. I was working with Mr. X. He was so goddamn smart. Knew all the drugs, equipment and procedures in and out. I often looked at him for guidance, before making any decision inside theatre. He was a very sweet, hardworking man. He often used to boost me up and taught me so many things.

The trouble started slowly. Patients were complaining of pain. They were wide awake during surgery. They had trouble mobilizing post surgery. We would get frequent calls from post surgery ICU regarding patients screaming in pain.

We ruled out everything. Bad drugs, inadequate dose, faulty batch, disruption of cold chain, inexperienced young trainees, drug addicts. No one could explain what was happening. Until one day we heard a lot of shouting in the corridors and X was escorted out of the campus by security.

It turned out that X was stealing opiods. The way he did it was so clever. As a technician, he was responsible for preparing the drugs before a surgery. We used to load our fentanyl, morphine, pethidine etc prior to the case starting. He used to dilute the drug with distilled water and smuggle out the drug in syringes. The patients were getting reduced dose of pain killers and not sedated properly.

He was a brilliant man. He worked very hard and was paid pennies, less than what a call centre employee makes. I can understand his motives. Pure pharmacy grade drugs are sold at high prices on black market. Last I heard, he was in jail.
