[Serious] What is an alarming fact that the next generation is going to have to deal with?

Whenever someone talks about automation stealing our jobs, it's usually followed by a mention of Universal Basic Income or some kind of socialist system. I'll list the reasons for why I don't believe this is the solution.

  • During the industrial revolution there were numerous groups that advocated for socialism to deal with the workers who they thought would be displaced by new technology. The Luddites went as far as destroying new machinery that they believed threatened their jobs. However, after the revolution was well under way the economies that turned to socialism failed and those that embraced the free-market made significantly more progress. There is a very similar situation occurring today. Socialists are using new technology as a reason to spread hysteria and promote their ideology. It would be wise not to listen to their siren song. The free-market will find a solution to the problem just like it has in the past.

  • The wealthy members of society don't have an obligation to fund everyone else's lifestyles. Simply put, you're not entitled to another person's money simply for being alive. Go ahead and point out how the current welfare system already does this, I'm opposed to welfare as well. However, universal basic income is worse because the money isn't merely funding programs that provide basic necessities. The government is handing the person a check and allowing them to choose how they want to spend it.

  • Basic income will encourage an influx of poor immigrants moving into wealthier countries. The money in these countries will run dry if tax-payers are forced to fund the lifestyle of every man, woman, and child that moves into the country to receive their basic income.

  • Continuing with the point above, there's nothing stopping poor immigrants from sending their basic income checks to family members back home, which will have an even more disastrous effect on the economy.

  • Basic income can easily be used to fund illegal activities.

  • Basic income will promote laziness and dependency on the government. UBI advocates like to point out examples of individual cities that have experimented with basic income while only experiencing a small drop in employment, however, these experiments were very short-term. People are much less likely to their your job if they know the basic income checks will only be temporary. Make them permanent, however, and you'll see many more people dropping out of the work force. Also, these programs were tried in small, dedicated communities. They're much more likely to fail when tried on a national level.
