[Serious] What have you done in real life that deserves gold?

This is the FIRST time I've commented on Reddit.

I'm a normal average guy, works 9-5 etc....

However, I used to work with a women who does ALOT of charity work and whilst working with her, she kept naggin me about a thing called "Holidays for Disabled" and said "It's good fun" "You'll love it".... blah blah but not going into details...

Anyways, I split up with an ex gf and going through a rough patch... I was still working with this lady and she mentioned about this "Holiday for Disabled People" thing.... and I thought f**k it... I've got nothing to lose.

Few months later, I was on a specially adapted coach with helpers (myself incl) and a lot of adults with disabilities... and I freaked out for 4hrs en-route to our holiday destination as I knew nobody.

When I arrived, I was introduced to P who I would be looking after for the week. P was in his late 40's blind and a fantastic laugh... Found out he lost his father to cancer and his elderly mother looks after him (lovely lady).

Everyday we would have "activities" like going to Zoo's, museums... etc.

As P is blind I would have to explain as much as I could in-detail to him as I could whilst making up funny bullshit to make him laugh and enjoy his holiday as he was on the same wavelength as me!

I remember the second morning after meeting him and had to help him shower. Was out of my "comfort zone" but I had to help him shower and dress every morning for a week. I would spend 12+ with him, and cut his food up.

I took my own holiday out from work for 1wk and even had to pay for this holiday as their a charity. I've done it 4 times, it's hard work, brilliant laugh BUT rewarding to offer respite to family members, carers and others that spend their lives looking after people with disabilities.
