our house is right on a bayou. across from our neighbors is a park where people like to swim. one day we see a man out on our neighbor's dock making all these wild gestures toward some water skiers. we realize he's doing the "man overboard" signal. we scan the water and see one of the swimmers from the park lying face down the water. 911 is called and we try to signal the boat. precious minutes pass and they finally notice. once they get to the man, it takes them even longer to figure out how to get him to shore. finally, they drag him along the water until they were close enough to shore for us to pick him up. my roommate grabs him by one arm, the man on the dock grabs him by the other arm, and i carry him by the legs to our back yard. my roommate begins to perform CPR on him and foamy water starts coming out of his mouth with his eyes still open. paramedics finally arrive and they try using a defibrillator. 45 minutes later he's declared dead. during this time we also find out that a five year old girl (the dead man's grand daughter) went missing. they find her later and place her body next to the grandfather.

relatively speaking, it wasnt very gory or anything but the unexpectedness of the whole situation and the fact that two people were declared dead right in my backyard is pretty jarring to someone who has never experienced that kind of thing. honestly i almost vomited. looking at his bloodshot and lifeless eyes will forever be imprinted in my memory.
