[SERIOUS] What is a seemingly harmless parenting mistake that will majorly fuck up a child later in life?

This is the story of my mom and step dad. He was an alcoholic and tried to molest me when I was 12. He cheated on my mom while she was pregnant with my brother and younger sister. He controlled my mom and endured physical abuse as well as financial and emotional abuse. To this day he has my brother and sister's social security and passports under lock and key, they have to ask permission to even see them and my mom isn't allowed to claim them on taxes. They're still together but both have become devout Catholics thinking it was better than them going to counseling and therapy. My brother and sister are 17 and 14 now and they have grown up in such a toxic hateful environment. I feel incredibly sorry for them. When I asked my mom to get help and get out she said ,"No, because the kids need both their mother and father." I don't recommend it to anyone.
